I was just given a Model 336. The lever will not open. I am new to Marlin lever action rifles. Is this a problem or am I missing something.

First and foremost put it on half-cock with safety on (if equipped)then look down the bore with a light and make sure it`s not loaded (BE SAFE AND DON`T SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT)...does it have a scope mounted on it ?? Reason I ask is the scope base mount screws can be a bit long and bind the action

No scope and not loaded. It seems like it is locked or latched in the closed position. I don't get any movement out of the lever. I think Something is catching in the mechanism.

OK,there`s a mechanism on top the lever that keeps the weapon from firing if the levers not completely closed, it can stick, spray some gun oil into all the places you can..(more the better) and let it sit a spell..you can pull hard on the lever its tough and try to open it
