.45-70 govt

Hi folks I'm new to Marlins as I don't have any yet. All my guns are Bolt action except the 870 shotgun. I'm really looking hard at the Marlin "Guide Gun" in .45-70 as a bear defense while I'm trying to get my quota of salmon during the year.

Any thoughts on this gun, the various models, etc. Is there a thread or two that already discusses this? HELP!!

Shooter do YOU have any info or experience regarding the NEVER MIND I just figured out that the calibre search was wrong. It is 45-70 I'm gonna renew this thread with the proper numbers.

Thanks buddy, you came to an old farts rescue!
Anytime my friend...anytime !
I have the 1895 GBL and just love it..I put a Wild West Trigger on it and a nice little Bushnell and this is one fine shooting gun. You have to get good shooting out at 200 yards since the load really drops hard after 150 but I have gotten some really nice targets at 100 and don't ever worry that it'll drop anything I encounter, Just a real classic beuty in my opionon

A 45-70 is great for bear defense, specially with the heavy bear loads. But with the shorter barrel Levers, get ready for a lot of kick. But if you like POWERFUL and don't reload, see if you can find a 450Marlin (IE 45-70 on steroids). Same cartridge, but belted so they can't be used in the antique 45-70s.

Availability of .450 seems to be non existent so I'll keep looking but also considering the aforementioned .45-70 as both seem to be effective on the stuff I'm interested in.
I absolutely Love my 1895GBL I'm a small framed guy and the recoil isn't bad with moderate loads like Hornady Leverevolution 325 grain FTX
You can always shoot cowboy loads as well the recoil on those is really light
1895 GBL has a really soft but pad and you can get limb saver but pads to slide on it
But shooting buffalo bore 405 grain or 500 grain get ready for the pain
The nice thing about the 1895 GBL
Is it has an 18 inch barrel and a full length six shot mag tube for great in close sweeping capabilities for hunting bear and you get six shots instead of four those extra two could be life savers when hunting bear
Mine is a new 2014 Marlin 1895 GBL
I think I paid just under six bills before tax for her and I wouldn't sell or trade her for nuthin Fit and finish wasn't bad at all and she is dead on accurate only problem that I encountered was when she was new the action was a little stiff but after working the lever some and shooting about 20 some rounds through it the actions pretty nice
I would think that if you are used to shooting a 12 gauge shot gun you should not have any problems with the recoil a 45/70 produces
The 1895 GBL's are available and out there they can be a little hard to find sometimes but Buds Guns should have some
Hope this helps
