Hi folks I'm new to Marlins as I don't have any yet. All my guns are Bolt action except the 870 shotgun. I'm really looking hard at the Marlin "Guide Gun" in .45-70 as a bear defense while I'm trying to get my quota of salmon during the year.

Any thoughts on this gun, the various models, etc. Is there a thread or two that already discusses this? HELP!!

Shooter I see a few of our compatriots of others forums here.
Shooter do YOU have any info or experience regarding the NEVER MIND I just figured out that the calibre search was wrong. It is 45-70 I'm gonna renew this thread with the proper numbers.

A 45-70 is great for bear defense, specially with the heavy bear loads. But with the shorter barrel Levers, get ready for a lot of kick. But if you like POWERFUL and don't reload, see if you can find a 450Marlin (IE 45-70 on steroids). Same cartridge, but belted so they can't be used in the antique 45-70s.
Availability of .450 seems to be non existent so I'll keep looking but also considering the aforementioned .45-70 as both seem to be effective on the stuff I'm interested in.
