Saturday the 9th a bunch of us 'Rock Heads" will again meet at the Sportsmans Shooting Club in Jefferson City MO. for the Spring 2015 Rock Slide. We all shoot Rock Island Pistols, mostly 1911s but some Compact models and revolvers. I have a full size 1911 in .45 acp and .38 Super, also a .38 Spl in 4" revolver. There will be 9MMs, .38 supers, .40s, 10mm, and .45acp in autos. In revolver the RI model 200 (4") and 206 (snubby) Rock Island is bringin out a compact .380 but not out on the street yet. Lots of guys waiting on it.

I have both tables built for the Bowling Pin shoot to determine the "KING PIN". A great afternoon of shooting and talking guns and shooting. We go out and eat afterwards.

The .38 spl Revolvers are a great bargin for the $. Both the 4" and 2" snubbie are all steel and like all Rock Island pistols have great triggers, SA and DA. Under $250 almost everywhere you cant beat em.

They arnt rated +P but according to RI anything but a steady diet is OK. They are built like a Colt Detective Special, Grips and speed loaders for the DS work in them.

+P .38s sold today are nowhere close to the Police Load made and shot in a lot of 38s thru the early 70s so I have no concern. I load my .38s I carry a lot hotter and have no problem.

So you are saying the old time 38 special loads were actually hotter than the present come factory loads now or were even hotter than present day +P? Or was that just the ammo for police use was loaded hotter back in the days of common 38 special being the main caliber used?

I dont have the model 206 snub, just the 4" one. However I have shot a friend of mines numerous times, this saturday in fact. The factory grips are a little to small for me but guess you could always switch them out. It is a good revolver for the $$.

In 1972 SAMMI reduced the loads for ALL AMMO across the board. If you get some old reloading manuals you can see the difference. The .38 spl load with 158 gr JHP was just adopted by a lot of Law Enforcement Depts. and became known as the Police Load. Not that they developed it. Sierra dont list any +P loads in their manuals. But look at the Max loads and its there, fact a little hotter than almost all others. I asked one the techs at Sierra about it one day and he said +P is just a bunch of BS by ammo mfgs. He said their loads were safe to shoot in any SAMMI compliant firearm, rated +P or not.

The labeling of ammo with +P is like painting a weapon black and/or calling it TACTICAL ...... A Marketing trick to get mo $$. Matter of fact I have a bunch of Tac Rocks and sticks at my place ..... It sells to the MALL NINJA bunch. Dont get me started on Tactical Gear, High Cap Mags, flash lights, lasers and Pic rails to mount everything under the kitchen sink on ...... OK mini rant over.

Of course with the adaptation of the .357 and all the Autos in bigger calibers the .38 fell from grace with almost all the PDs.

Concerning the warranty by RI, its LIFETIME on the weapon reguardless of how many owners. They also pay shipping both ways. All the warranty work is done in Parump, NV at the RI US facility.

Thanks for the info on the +P. I do know when shooting the +P they sure do have a noticeable greater power to them over the 38 special. LOL at your black op rocks and sticks. Perhaps the power of the 38 special was lowered for liability reasons as well as the +P extra $$.
I saw a comment about buying a used S&W model 10 for about the same money as a RI 206. I checked out gunbroker just to see if I could buy an old Smith 10 for $250. There were a few listed for around that price but most were not in very good condition. So buy a new RI 206 or 200 and get a warranty for life could end up being a better deal but then considering the Smith will always be worth more is another consideration.
Like I need another revolver! I think I will just stay outside and window shop. I get to learn more about guns and keep the $$ in my wallet this way.
Back to your OP do most of the shooters at the Rock Slide comment on accuracy of the guns?
