That is the standard electronic form letter sent by a staffer as a reply based on your subject matter. Would be interested to see a real reply that may or may not address your concerns.
I believe that Senators and Congressmen get so much mail that they dictate a response letter that is sent out later. Often handled by staff members. The response normally covers their position on the issue. Only if your letter falls outside the norm, then the politician takes the time to give a direct answer in his/her words.

J.K. emails: I am not a political person by nature, I don’t typically jump up and shout my opinion on many things going on in Washington, DC because it is not in my nature. Also, being in the military, it would not be a good thing to develop opinions about politicians who may some day become my Commander-In-Chief. That’s not to say that I don’t exercise my right to vote, I definitely do, I just try to not get overly emotional about political issues. However, this latest crusade by Senator Feinstein really has me fired up. I have sent the following . . .

I am a Lieutenant in the US Navy, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, a Florida resident and am currently stationed in Washington DC. I have dedicated the last 10 years of my life to protecting this nation, and plan to make that a total of 24 before I retire.

I am vehemently opposed to the 2013 Feinstein Assault Weapons legislation, and while I know you are a busy man, please continue reading to find out why. I am concerned that even Senator Feinstein knows that the bill will not pass as it is proposed, and this initial proposal is merely being used as a bargaining tactic to “soften the blow” and “show compromise” on later proposals that would still infringe upon our rights.

The oath I took when I was commissioned is very similar to the one that you have taken, and I consider that a very important promise to this great nation…not merely words to be repeated as a formality to taking an appointed/elected position as it appears some of your colleagues seem to treat it. Specifically, I would direct your attention to the following section:

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion…

The Second Amendment of the Constitution we have both sworn to support and defend states that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

We are at a crossroads right now after the tragedy in Connecticut. There are colleagues of yours that will use the fear, emotion, and television air-time brought on by this tragedy to further their own political motivations.

This country is facing much bigger issues than those that Senator Feinstein is trying to address. And the bill that she is proposing would not have done anything to stop the tragedy in CT, as many of those laws were already in place in that state. It is unfortunate, but criminals break laws and infringing upon the rights of law-abiding citizens is not the way to prevent tragedies like the one in Newtown.

To quote one of your fellow Senators (Senator Kelly Ayotte), “Denying the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens will not change the behavior of those intent on using firearms to commit horrific crimes.”

I hope that you would keep the promise that you made to this nation when you took your oath, as I intend to keep mine. I trust that you will oppose all proposals that will infringe upon the rights granted to us in the Constitution. If you are a man of honor and keep the promise that you made to this nation, then you can count on my vote in the next election.

If, however, you choose not to uphold a right granted in the Constitution, I will find a representative that is more deserving of my vote that can uphold the oath that they make to this nation to defend the Constitution.

Thank you for contacting me about the killings in Newtown, CT. I appreciate hearing from you.

Like all Americans, I was horrified and sickened to learn about the mass murder in Newtown, CT on December 14, 2012. As you know, Adam Lanza murdered 26 people that day, including educators and young children at Sandy Hook Elementary School and his mother at her house, before committing suicide. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the families who were affected.

In response, we need to come together as a nation, carefully reflect on what happened, and have a thoughtful dialogue on how we can improve public safety and protect our children. Of note, this atrocity in Newtown was the direct result of serious mental illness - something we have consistently observed in other mass killings over the years. We therefore need to better protect ourselves from mentally ill individuals who seek to carry out such atrocities. We also need to review and improve how we take care of the mentally ill. I therefore value your input on this issue and look forward to Congress debating which policies should be implemented to improve public safety.

Dear Sir,

As I work to meet the needs and priorities of our community and the nation, please know how much I appreciate having the benefit of your views. In response to your outreach to my office, I wanted to share my views regarding gun violence, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. As Americans, we all felt the loss of each child and each teacher and administrator, and my thoughts and prayers are with their families and neighbors.

There are have been far too many incidents of gun violence in our nation and I believe that we must take action to end gun violence and increase gun safety. We should do so by recognizing the responsibilities of gun ownership; ensuring that guns do not fall into the hands of criminals or those who are mentally ill; and strengthening the safety and security of our homes, schools, communities, and our public spaces. I have long sought action to achieve these goals, and I am encouraged by the recent efforts by Congress and the Obama Administration to reach out to the many factions in this debate and identify meaningful action we can take to reduce gun violence. I have heard from many Pennsylvanians since the tragic shooting in Newtown, all calling for action to protect their families and their communities.

Democratic leadership in the House recently formed a new House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, chaired by my colleague Mike Thompson, (CA-05), an avid hunter and Vietnam War veteran. As an active member of the task force, I am working with my colleagues as we reach out to law enforcement, gun owners, mayors, victims, mental health professionals, and experts in violence prevention to identify a comprehensive approach to reduce gun violence.

Recommendations are likely to include better enforcement of current laws and new provisions that will require either executive or legislative action. These include: reauthorization of the Federal Assaults Weapons Ban, tougher criminal penalties against straw purchasers, closing loopholes that enable millions of gun purchases to be made privately or at gun shows without background checks, ban on large magazines and multi-round ammunition, methods to better ensure accuracy and timeliness of database for seriously mentally ill who should not be able to purchase guns, and improvements in available treatment for mental illnesses, and research on gun violence and effective prevention strategies. I support these efforts.

In the new 113th Congress I have cosponsored several bills aimed at curbing gun violence including the Gun Transparency, Accountability and Enforcement (Gun TRACE) Act, whichwill enable the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (AFT) to release crime gun trace data to state and local law enforcement and the public; retain records of background checks on firearm purchases for 90 days; and require inventory audits of federally licensed gun dealers to prevent the illegal transfer of guns into the wrong hands. I am also a cosponsor of the Fire Sale Loophole Closing Act. Right now, when a gun dealer has their license revoked or denied renewal by the federal government, they are permitted to convert the gun inventory into a private collection to be sold without the requirement of performing a background check on the purchaser. This bill would end this practice of allowing evasion of background checks.

In addition, I am currently working with my colleagues to repeal existing prohibitions on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Health and Human Services (HHS) to conduct crucial scientific research into firearm safety. Gun violence is a public health issue and public health agencies should have the ability to develop and pursue violence prevention and mental health research.

Now is the time for us to put our determination to end gun violence in our society to work to prevent both another tragedy such as happened in Newtown and the senseless loss of life that occurs almost daily across our nation due to gun violence.

I am a gun owner who believes in the right to bear arms in defense of self, family and property. During my 12 years serving in Congress, I received an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association for defending our Constitutional Rights. I opposed the so-called "assault weapons ban" and opposed the Brady Bill. I supported repealing both the Clinton gun ban and the Washington, D.C. gun ban. I voted to protect the private information of gun owners; to protect state gun laws; and to protect firearm and ammunition manufacturers, dealers or importers from lawsuits and damages related to criminal misuse by a third party.

As a life-long hunter, I also believe the rights and freedoms of hunters must be guarded and I developed an executive order that the president signed to enhance hunting and fishing opportunities at wildlife refuges and national preserves. As your Senator, I will continue to protect our Constitutional freedoms and will be a strong advocate for preserving these rights and traditions for future generations.

As a United States Senator, I took an oath to defend the Constitution. The Second Amendment makes clear that Americans have the right to own guns, and the Supreme Court over time has given meaning to this right.

When our children and families are no longer safe at our schools, in our malls, and in our movie theaters, then we as a country must take action. The shocking numbers of public shootings throughout the country last year, culminating in Newtown, Connecticut, demands that we engage in a serious national discussion about gun violence, not just in terms of weapons and bullets, but also including mental health access, public safety officers, and our responsibility both as individuals and a society.

Like all rights, it must be balanced against others. I have supported restrictions on the possession of assault-style weapons so our public safety officers are not put at increased risk, and restrictions on the ability of criminals to possess handguns but I fully support the right of Ohioans to own firearms.
