My son gathers up fallen apples and puts them out. Any 5-6 at a time and he cuts them in half so the scent drifts better. The idea is not to feed the deer but to have them check to see if anymore snacks have mystically showed up. This is his routine for several weeks prior to and into the start of the season. He tosses them in from a distance so as to not leave human scent in the immediate area where they feed.
He has tried several store bought grain attractants but most of that stuff gets eaten by the racoons and turkeys.
