How heavy is the recoil of a rifle chambered for 300 Winchester magnum?

A friend is picking his new rifle up next week and I am anxious to know how bad it will hurt him. He has a bad back and I am afraid the recoil will be a bit too much for him.

I have seen several recoil reducers advertised. Do any forum members have experience with any of them? (NOT recoil pads) Please let me know.

    I appreciate all your help.

Compared to a heavy load 270

I used to load my 270 pretty heavy...I used 150 gr BTSP loaded to + 2900 fps. I had (I think) a Model 78 Remington. It kicked pretty good. I imagine the 300 has more recoil. I had a 54 Lyman GPR and with 150 grains of powder and a 450 gr bullet it kicked the crapola out of me. I now have a 50 cal TC Bone Collector and it is very light...it too has a heavy recoil. I am trying to find something to compare to. I am trying to keep my friend from getting into something he cant handle. My advice to him was...for the first few shots, shoot standing up and not at the bench.

I guess my 270 is all I can compare it with and I bet the 300 Win Mag more horsepower goin backwards than the 270. 1/3? 1/2 again as much, nearly equal? I never shot a 444 but I have shot a lot of heavy BP guns.

    The 300 wm is a kicker !
But it is a very quick kicker, and that could be an issue.
A Zeiss Scope, with has long eye relief, would be a definite advantage.

A recoil pad, would be advisable, more to stop the butt from slipping, and not to soak up recoil.

Not the sort of rifle to bench rest, but an awesome hunter

    Now I remember...

What about the cylindrical type recoil reducer that slides up the (rifle's) butt??;)

I have to copy and paste this for him.
    Thanks Bucky.

    Yeah right

As I mentioned before he has arthritis and is now having back problems. I am trying to convince him to get something lighter. He saw a big boomer at a cheap price and said to himself..."Self, Git it!" He has never hunted. Not shot any guns since 71 after he got out of service. I sent him Chuck Hawkes stuff and others. It is all I am going to do. When he comes whining...I will offer to buy it from him. But I think he will give it to his son.

    He needs an intervention

His macho is getting in the way of his good sense. But I tried and you guys gave me the ammo to try to convince him to look elsewhere at something he can handle...we did our part.

    Thanks

    Not to worry

I think we have done what we can to avert some pain. I didn't use to be recoil shy but I am getting a bit more that way. I am in better shape than him and I had to get rid of anything over 50 cal BP guns. I can load the 50 light and the 45 heavy and do ok, but the 54 kicked the waddin out of me. I am sure the 300 Win is about like the 54. It isn't so much that it hurt the shoulder but after a few shots it scrambled my brain...really, like shooting a Barrett 50 does to those who shoot them.

You know what I mean...I know he is going to be recoil sensitive because of his physical ailments and the fact that it has been since Nam that he shot anything the last time. (To tell the truth, I don't think he knows how hard a 12 ga kicks and I want to be there when he finds out about the recoil of the 300. With a video cam...with sound.:D

More than is comfortable from the bench:eek:...but you ain't gonna notice shooting at game. I'd put a sissy pad on it. The new recoil pads do eat a lot of the thump:)

    Recoil pad

I got a Pachmayr slip on for my Bone Collector. It works well even over the factory pad that is on the butt. I didn't get the pad for the recoil reducer though. I got it to give me more length on the stock. T/C states that they "shortened the stock by 1 1/4"" for some dumb reason. I would need a longer eye relief scope for it. I got a Center Point with a 5" eye relief and it still gets my glasses. So I took off the scope and the rifle is for sale. I do not intend to spend more money on the rifle. T/C screwed up and it cost me a lot of money. Besides the cost of the rifle and 3 scopes I had to spend another $100 on glasses for hunting.

That's a bit fancy, just put a Pachmayr recoil pad on it and all will be fine.
As I said, its quick on the recoil,,.....Just make sure you have it pulled in fairly firm

    I have no doubt

I was out at the range one day in 100 degree heat and was having a hard time keeping the barrel cooled down. No place to hide it from the sun. I was using a 400gr .54 cal bullet over 120 gr of FFF 777. I had to stop after about 8-10 shots because I was getting disoriented. My brain felt like it was shaking inside when I fired. It took about 12 hours to get rid of the headache.

I learned a bit about shooting in the open, in the direct sunlight, firing heavy loads. I cannot imagine the 300 Win Mag being as bad, but I am guessing it is not far from it. I hope my friend can handle it. If he can't, I would have to let him use my 30-30 and I would use his 300. Once. :D
