I recently inherited a very nice 1870's Marlin 38-55, ( Serial # 18963) and am trying to find out something about the history of these and what their potential value might be. It's a rather heavy piece and I was told that it was considered a "Saddle Gun". I'm hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction to learn more about it. See enclosed photo:
