G'day, on Sunday the 10th I will take possession of a model 1889. I've never owned a Marlin, a few Winchester 94s but no Marlins. Since it's over 130 year old I want to take it apart, inspect and clean it before I try to fire it. I've been looking for days but can find no info on dismantling an 1889. If anyone knows where to get a step by step guide or advice on this I would appreciate knowing.

Have you checked out any utube videos? If there aren't any check out how to disassemble a 1894 or 94. I believe these guns are almost the same. I think the biggest difference between the 1889s and 1894s was they changed the firing pin. I know there are videos on how to disassemble the 1894s/94s cause that's what used to take mine apart. It's a fairly easy take down process. good luck. If you have any problems shoot me a PM and i can talk you through it. joe

Thanks Joe, I have spent hours in front of the monitor looking for u-tube videos of the 1889 but haven't come across one detailing dismantle and reassembly yet. I've taken down a 94 but every model is different and even some of the same models built years apart have slight differences. I'm just being overly cautious as I don't want to remove a screw and have a small spring or metal part fly across the garage to be lost forever.

Shouldn't be any small spring surprises. If it's like my 94 1st remove the lever screw then the bolt will slide out. Then remove the stock. Then i usually loosen the hammer flat spring so it pivots off the hammer. Then i remove the screw that holds the hammer in place. Usually have to wiggle the trigger some. Then the short screw on the bottom of the lower tang plate. Then pry off the lower tang with the trigger assembly.. All that's left is your carrier screw and shell loader screw.. The only small spring you might run into is in the bolt. I think the 1889 had a 2 piece firing pin so i'm not sure how they are put together. Yeah i just checked utube and was surprised to see no videos on the 1889 disassembly.

Looks like the firing pin is one piece, according to Numrich parts diagram.

I found a step by step explanation on the Marlin owners forum from 2017. I have it all apart except I didn't take the barrel off the receiver. Has a lot of oil sprayed inside but pretty dirty, all the screws are damaged somewhat so someone has taken it apart at some time but it hasn't had a thorough cleaning for many years. A lot of wear but I think everything will function as it should after I clean all the parts and get it back together. Speaking of which, anyone know what to soak all the parts in to get the gunk off? I was thinking of letting it soak in Varsol for a day or so then blowing it all off with compressed air.

I just cleaned my parts in Hoppes. But my parts weren't too bad. Glad you got it all apart. They come apart a lot easier than my Win 1892. When you put it back together pay attention to the shell loading port latch. I didn't just put it in and got it a little out of alignment and it somehow it blocked my magazine tube. Re positioned it and it works fine now.
