When the lever has been cycled it will return to lock against stock, however with just a slight and I do mean slight tap on the stock it will release and fall approximately 1/4".
So the question is what needs to be done to it to fix and or repair this issue?
The lever latch probably needs lubrication or removal to clean it up and the recess it sits in and maybe replace the spring. Its the little button on the lever that latches when the lever is fully closed.

Yup. Maybe it's worn or has been modified. Lightening up the force of that latch is a trick used for competition. Maybe someone went to far. Should be an easy fix.
If its over 20 years old...ALL springs are suspect...
Hrm, gotta get J&P Springs on that...they don't have a 336 kit yet
At least Marlin & Numrich have the springs you need!!
