Marlin Model 60 problems

I won this rifle at a DU Dinner ~ 15 years ago. It spent several years in the safe until I was teaching my son to shoot. I actually started him on a bolt-action first (my old Marlin 781) and then brought the Model 60 along on a subsequent range trip to introduce him to a semi-auto. After less than 50 rounds it started having problems with FTF/FTE. I cleaned it when we got home and had a similar experience the next trip out and it has sat unused for a few years now.

I took it out again today when I took both of my girls to the range, as I needed two rifles and the same thing happened. After a few dozen rounds, the bolt won't even close. Brought it home and cleaned it up and it seems to be functioning fine again.

Has anybody had this experience? This rifle has less than 200 rounds through it and has done this out of the box. I just thought it was a cheap rifle but as I started searching the 'net today, a lot of people seem to regard this rifle as a good shooter. I have run across several threads that suggest it is very ammo dependent for good function. I have been shooting cheap Remington "Thunderbolt", as I bought a bunch some years back through Sportsman's Guide at a deal. At this point I'm going to break it down, give it a thorough cleaning and try some CCI MiniMags the next time out. Anybody have any other thoughts or experiences to share?

It' good that you got this rifle 'out of the closet', they are very accurate for a semi. One thing I'd suggest is to use SV instead of Minimags. It will fire the MMs but the SV will be more accurate. When you have the gun torn down you should clean all 'old lube' off since it may be 'dried out'. I use PTFE grease Very light-thin coat. I also polished ALL parts that are friction points, like the Hammer/Sear interface, and the 'pivot pins' of those parts. And not to disparage this Forum but I've found tons of info on Rimfirecentral, which has separate forums for different makes of rifles. On there, Arrowdodger has some Stickies detailing maintenance that bear reading as well as a few YT vids. Lots of info available there. I've done almost all of ADs mods and now have a fine rifle with a 2# trigger (see Floppy Disc Mod by AD and I Cut One Coil off the Hammer spring ).
Hope you enjoy your 'NEW' rifle.:D

Mine model 60 is an old Glenfield model . It runs like a champ and eats just about any old cheap ammo I put in it .
