I'd like a 336 stainless because it seems like the best overall lever action. They seem impossible to find. Wish they would make one with a laminated stock.

I'm looking for a lever action 30-30 for home defense. I prefer side load and drop safe. How do the new Marlins compare to old ones? Are the Henry or Winchesters as good?

The new Ruglins do not/will not have micro groove barrels. That is a mistake, IMHO. The micro groove barrels optimize accuracy when using copper jacketed bullets, the ones most likely used by hunters, especially when you only buy factory ammo ( which is the majority of hunters ).

Reloaders who want to shoot more cheaply, will like the new guns better. The barrels won't be choked by lead build up as soon as they would be with the micro groove barrels.

All things being equal, I would probably go with a new side loading Henry. The also have the option of loading with the tube. That is a big advantage when unloading the rifle, instead of having to rack the rounds through the action.

They also have an all weather version in stainless steel, but I think the stock is still made of wood. Good luck.

I have all three of the new Ruger-made Marlin 1895's and they shoot extremely well. I'm expecting the new 336 Classic to be released sometime over the next two weeks and can't wait to get my hands on one. BTW, the new Marlins so far can be unloaded from the loading gate!
