Out in my hunting area, which is a 709 acre farm which was turned over to the county years ago, there is a lot of fence wire buried just on top of the ground or an inch or 2 under the surface. I fell last week and it pissed me off. I want to get some wire cutters but I do not want a huge set of bolt cutters.

Will a pair of 10" fence pliers cut strands of barb wire? I need to cut out a few hundred feet of wire where trees have blown over and tore down the fences and buried the wire. I do not know what I need really. I mainly need wire cutters for steel wire. For example will these be sufficient?:

I'm thinking bolt cutters,a little bit of over kill but it will save your hands.

I need compactness. I will need them while hunting. I won't be clearing fence lines. I will be cutting out access holes in knocked down fences. Will the ones I posted a picture of cut the wire?

All kidding aside...go to your nearest Farm & Tractor store...where they sell barbed wire...they will have the best ( and most compact ) choices for your needs.

Short answer: YES...the ones above will do.

I think I found something that may be easier to use??? Changed my choice: a bit long but not too bad. 14" and reasonable priced:

I found a 14" set not too far away, pictured, and a few blocks away the farm store has a few to choose from at a good price. I may shuffle over there and see what they have. I will even see if they will let me cut up a little.

The junk I will be cutting is old, old farm fencing. I just emailed the state to ask if it is ok, and if they will supply some barrels to haul it out. I have no way to haul it. If they will haul it out I will go at it like a beaver after a new tree. If not, I will be lazy and only chop it out as I need to.

The bolt cutters will be heavier more cumbersome, and more difficult to carry.

Thanks. I won't be pulling the entire fenceline down. I will be cutting the occasional opening, or cleaning up the low stuff that trips someone who tries to cross that place where there is no wire visible. One or 2 times per outing is all I foresee using them while hunting. I do plan to get a set of 14" bolt cutters for the long days when I will be clearing it out. I have to find out what the state wants to do with it. If they let me keep it, I will have to rent a truck and haul it off to the scrap yard.

The fence pliers will work, but the bolt cutters will be easier on the hands. I have the pliers. Next month, the bolt cutters.

I got the cutters I posted in the opening post. I had a chance to use them already. I made a hole in a fence and then closed it up after I went through the opening. I needed to find a shortcut/bypass so I would not have to go through some pretty stickery stuff.

I wandered a little out of the area I was familiar with and got turned around. I finally found my landmark and headed the way I needed to go, but that area has really grown over and I didn't want to backtrack. I was worn out.

The fence pliers worked great. But I will still get the cable/bolt cutters too if I get permission to clean out the old wire. There is about 300 yards of it, 3 and 4 strands high where it is still standing, and then also some 4: square fencing (hog wire?) too. I will have to figure out how to pull the posts.

Glad I got them. They saved me from having to walk about a mile of rough brush.

Part of your problem getting caught in barbed wire on the farm is because your shuffle walk. Pick up your feet when you walk and you will trip less often on the wire. LOL it might help.
Good luck pulling up fields of barbed wire. You might end up looking like you rolled in the rolls of barbed wire. You might have cuts where you didn't know you had places.

I shuffle because my legs don't work anymore. Oh, and as mentioned somewhere in another post, I will only be yankin out a few hundred yards if I can get permission to do it. So far I haven't heard back from the Parks.

MOst of my problems now are from that damn diabetes. My weight shot up when I went on insulin and I can't get it down. That extra weight puts a lot of stress on my hip and back, and I have a birth defect in my lower spine anyway, and I have dislocated both knees once, and my right one dislocated a second time and broke once. I used to be an accident lookin for a place to happen. Now that it has happened I am feelin the aches and pains of 60 years of knee troubles and 65 years of back troubles.

But this week I got out 3 times and managed to do some fence clipping where I needed access. Those pliers worked great. I haven't had a lot of luck getting squirrels but it has been windy and wet. Tomorrow is another day though and I will be out early...pain or no pain, and stiff or limber. I think the exercise is doing me some good. I know the naps in the woods sure make me feel great.
