A friend suggested I take my 795SS out and try to shoot it before I sent it back to Marlin, which I did. Low and behold my gun fired perfectly. I can not cock my 795SS if I do not chamber a round. This must be a safety precaution so a person does not damage the rifle by dry firing it. No mention was made of this anywhere so I did not know it. I carefully read everything before I was going to fire it. Now it is to cold to shoot in Michigan. Nest year I'll start firing some of the many rounds I bought for it. I still plan on shooting in the Appletree. Many thanks to all of you. Shoot safe.
