greyhawk50; hombre243. I never tried the match in the straw trick as a kid. The box says - "Keep away from children." I guess I could try it now?? QUOTE said:We used to roll up a piece of broom handle with aluminum foil and make a tube of about 1" dia and 12" long, then stuff the tube full of the cut off heads of paper matches. We couldn't afford to be in rocket club and we proved we should be anywhere near there anyway.
We could get our match head rocket to poof off the ramp for about 3 feet, so naturally, bigger would be better. We rolled up about 3 feet of broomstick and made an extra long tube. This was our final attempt to launch a rocket. We knew having a backstop would create more thrust so we backed the tail end into a wooden gang box and set it off. It shot up about 4 feet and then burned out, but the spray of match heads was magnificent. Worth the effort.
We went away satisfied we had a successful failure. But when Dad came home he came in all hot and bothered and we asked why he was so mad.
He said he pulled into the garage and saw smoke coming from under the gang box that held his electricians tools and wire and when he pulled it out from the wall, the wall was smoldering and there was a 2 x 2 foot hole burned through to the outride. Luckily there was a water line run close by and he put the fire out pretty quick.
The fire on my hinder quarters lasted a bit longer than the fire in the wall. AND besides a blistering, I had to give him all my lawn mowing money for the rest of the summer to pay to repair the hole. Of course at that time I didn't realize the boards were easy and cheap to replace. What really fried my tailpiece was when he had the garage sided, and he never fixed the hole.My guess is that I paid for about 150 bucks worth of siding, and that would have been in about 1962...things were a bit cheaper back then.
He really got honked off when my brother and I made a boxing ring in the garage out of old carpet we scavenged, and roped the ring with 10 foot pieces of #4 THHN copper...3 ropes high. Yep, I wasn't smart enuf to just walk around the ring 3 times and leave it in one piece.
By now y'all can figure I spent a goodly amount of my young life either standing up or sleepin on my belly.![]()
