I've got a Browning distributor edition stainless BL22 that I'd like to scope for longer distance (75yds) squirrel terrorism in the backyard. Maybe pick off a few crows pilfering corn off the deer feeder too. The current setup (aftermarket Marbles semi-buckhorn and fiber-optic front) are good for me out to 50 yards or so. I'd like to pick them off with a head shot at the back tree line just as they start to sneak out into the lawn toward the bird feeders. Those are usually small greys so shot placement would need to be precision.

Initially I'll probably go with a cheap 2.5x20 scope I have that isn't getting used but I'm curious about the dovetail type scope mounts. I've never mounted a scope that way. The 10/22 I had years ago came with the scope already mounted so I didn't have to do any research back then.

Are all the dovetail receivers the same width? It seems all the ring manufacturers' catalogs I've seen just mention "dovetail mount" for a .22 rifle with no mention of width, etc.

I'm a 99% iron sights guy but those little greys are starting to make Annie mad when they eat from the bird feeders so I have to do something about it with as few shots as possible.

Thanks Hyph. That helped so I didn't sound like a neophyte when I stopped in at the gun shop yesterday.

All they had was the tip off Weavers with the screws on only one side of the tube clamp. Amazing, I got the scope on level the first try. I better buy a lottery ticket.

If I get time this afternoon I'll take a walk out to the dirt pile and get it on paper. If I can get some time this evening to load some more .30-30 and .45LC rounds I may take it and the others to the range tomorrow morning. Now that I have a scoped .22 I'd love to know how it and the CCI mini-mag hp's work out to 100 yards. Gray tails beware!
