Went down to my brother-in-Laws yesterday. He was starting to build a Chicken Coop. A friend of his is putting in a Commercial Chicken operation and the contract stipulates that you can have NO OTHER FOUL on the place. So he is getting his laying hens.

Got the four walls up and will put on some tin today. Eggs for breakfast and Fried Chicken for supper ........ :D

When I was a kid, I worked in Missouri on a commercial chicken/turkey farm. One summer myself and 3 other guys caught, debeaked and vaccinated 32,000 chickens in 4 days. I was officially initiated into the Chicken Catchers of America- CCofA. I won't elaborate on the initiation. Just suffice it to say...it aint a pretty thang.

I didn't notice it to be especially nasty smelling. It was hotter than bejeebers in the chicken houses and the sawdust eventually became the favorite weapon of choice when we got bored. (kinda like a "used food" fight)

I was elected first watch when it got started raining and I had to keep the turkeys awake so they wouldn't drown. (sounds more like a chicken catchers version of a snipe hunt...but I found out later they weren't jokin.) Turkeys will fall asleep, beaks wide open and head thrown back...and if it rains hard enough and long enough and the turkey is not awakened...it will drown. My job was to gobble or make a lot of noise every so often to get the flock cackling so they would blow out the water.

Thank Heavens I never had to do CPR on one of them cacklin ignor...you know what I mean.

In case anyone lives near Brookfield/ Marceline Missouri area...back in the mid to late 60's you may remember Mar-Brook Farms. A poultry raising farm under contract with Campbells Soup. I don't know what the owners first name was, but the sons name was Jim...Biggs.

Now, back to the movie...

PS If the chickens got all wadded up in a pile and we didn't get them scattered, the ones on the bottom would smother. We were allowed to keep those that didn't make it. Between the 4 of us we managed to put on several chicken and catfish fries during the summer. For a long time I was sick of fried chicken.

Now I like it again but, if it aint free ranging and farm fed...I can choke it down but I only eat it because it is what I got. Store bought chicken just aint as good as free range. But ya gotta watch out for em crossin the road. They cold cause an accident. They're worse than those dang squirrels.

As a matter of fact just had fresh made Chicken Sal on Toast for Supper. Left over from one I roasted the other day. Now will take the carcus, boil it down and strain out the little bones and make FRESH CHICKEN SOUP. Made with those big wide Egg Noodles, celary, carrots, onion and whatever spices I throw in.
